At around 5:30 a.m. on 18 September, four militants attacked an Indian Army Brigade headquarters at the town of Uri near the Line of Control in a pre-dawn ambush. They are said to have lobbed 17 grenades in 3 minutes. As a rear administrative base camp with tents caught fire, 13–14 army personnel were killed. A gun battle ensued lasting six hours, during which all the militants were killed. 19 – 30 were reported to have been injured in the attack.
“A group of heavily armed terrorists targeted the rear administrative base of a unit at Uri, Kashmir. In the counter action, four terrorists were eliminated and combing operations are in progress. The administrative base had the large strength of troops of units turning over after their tour of duty who were stationed in tents/temporary shelters which caught fire, and resulted in heavy casualties. We salute the sacrifice of 17 soldiers who were martyred in the operation,” the army said in a statement.
Like the millions of others, the Indian cricketers too condemned the brutal attack on Uri and took on their Twitter handles to express their grief.

India shows restrain-Pakistan shows disdain. We offer solutions-they reply with ammunitions. Our soldiers die-they deny. No more. #uriattack
