Team India will play their 500th Test, against New Zealand, in Kanpur from Thursday (September 22).
To mark this momentous occasion, Cricket Australia invited fans to pick India’s “Greatest Test XI”.
The fans were asked to select the players from a long list of the greatest openers, middle-order batting stars, the wicketkeepers, the fast bowlers and spinners.
According to the website portal, more than 50,000 votes were cast with Mahendra Singh Dhoni garnering the highest percentage among all players. Dhoni tallied 93 per cent of votes against others in wicket-keeper category, which included Syed Kirmani and Kiran More, for the number 7 spot.
Sunil Gavaskar and Virender Sehwag were chosen as the openers with Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar at number 3 and number 4. VVS Laxman was at number 5 while Sourav Ganguly was picked for the number 6 spot.
Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan were the fast bowlers while the spinners who got the nod were Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.
